On top of the world: Germany's players hold their trophy up high as they celebrate their trophy win
Germany has tonight won the 2014 World Cup final at the Maracana stadium in Rio after Mario Gotze’s 113rd  extra-time goal gave them a 1-0 victory over Argentina.
Meanwhile, of the 10 nominees for the golden ball(the most outstanding player at the tournament),
Argentina's Lionel Messi came out tops despite his teams loosing to the German machine.
German keeper Manuel Neure won the Golden Glove, which is the tournament's best goal keeper while Colombia's James Rodriguez was named the tournament's top scorer with 6 goals.

Nothing hurts more than a last minute goal, and Argentina put up a good fight. I really  REALLY wanted them to win with Germany coming in as the obvious favorites especially after the humbling defeat they gave Brazil.

However, tonight wasn't Argentina's and the look of on Messi's face as he picked up the best golden ball award was just heartbreaking. He couldn't even muster a smile...
Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella, said:
'I feel sadness not to have been able to win the tournament but pride in the team that played a great game.
'I congratulate the players. They are a pride to the nation for the efforts they made and the tournament they played.'

In the end, I guess the better team won. Germany wins the trophy again after 24 years. They last won the world cup in 1990-as West Germany. Before then they won it in 1954 and 1974.
Up to a billion people watched the just concluded final, potentially making it the most-watched sporting event ever.
