FG Launches New 64-page Nigeria E-passport, Increases Price

To ameliorate the sufferings of heavy Nigerian travelers, the Federal Government on Wednesday launched the new 64-page Nigerian e-passport.
The new travel document will be in use with the existing 32-page e-passport.
President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo were issued their new passports after their data were captured before the Federal Executive Council meeting started at the State House, Abuja.
Jonathan urged the immigration officers to be efficient and committed as the impression they give visitors at the point of entry like the airports determine the perception the country gets.
He also tasked the service to do everything possible to end the complaints of Nigerians abroad by making it easier for them to get Nigerian passports.

He said:
“I always sympathize with those who travel almost on a weekly basis, changing passport every month, at least we have moved a step forward. The key thing is for us to have a robust relationship with key countries so that some of these frequent travelers may not need visas, that will really help us more.
“One thing one must know today is that it is not the issue of 64-page passport that is key to Nigerians but the security. If our passport could be easily faked by criminals, then we will have problems. One thing again is that how can Nigerians be able to get passport easily especially those living outside this country.
“When I travel there is this complaints about how to get the Nigerian passport not necessarily the issue of 64-page passport but how do they get passport, so the ministry must look into this.”

He went on: “What affects every traveler is how efficient and committed our immigration officers work at our airports, visitors that come into the country have different impressions about our immigration officers, so they must improve. They are the image of this country, how they handle visitors matters so much, if they conduct themselves poorly, it reflects on all of us. So their conducts at the airports are key besides the passport.”

The new passport which takes effect from August 1 attracts a fee of N20,000.

Landlady's Children Rob Tenant, Cut Off Scrotum In Lagos

Victim: Yinka Offehin
A 35-year-old man, Yinka Offehin, is battling for his life at a private hospital in Lagos State after his scrotum was cut by the children of his landlady.
The Edo State indigene, who resides on Popoola Street, off Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos, was said to have been attacked while sleeping in his room with his family members.
His wife, Bisi, who was with him when the incident happened, identified the assailants as Solomon and Damilola, the children of the landlady.

She said,
“On Thursday morning, around 3am, while we were sleeping, we heard loud bangs on our door. We initially thought they were armed robbers because the house beside ours had recently been robbed.
“When they entered, we saw they were children of our landlady. They began destroying our electronics and other property.
“There were two of them. One held a knife in his hand. They took N800, 000. They descended on my husband and he also fought back. In that confusion, my husband shouted and we saw that one of the attackers had cut Yinka’s scrotum. I can’t say what they used to cut off my husband’s scrotum.”
She added that her husband, though in pain, was able to hold on to one of his attackers till dawn, while the other fled the scene.

Bisi said her husband could not be admitted at a general hospital because of the ongoing doctors’ strike, but was eventually taken to a private hospital in the area.

When our correspondent visited the victim at the hospital, he told PUNCH Metro the genesis of his problem was when he had a misunderstanding with his landlady and was asked to vacate his apartment.

“I was asked to leave the house immediately, but after the intervention of the traditional ruler of the community, I was asked to leave by the end of August.
“But that decision did not go down well with the children of my landlady and they continued to make trouble with me.
“I was already planning to leave their house and had even contacted an agent when they attacked me without any provocation. I want the government to fight for me,” he said.

A doctor in the hospital, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that his patient would need up to three months to recover.

He said, “We have stitched the area where the scrotum was torn. It may take up to three months before it will heal. He needs time to fully recover from the injury.”

A relative said the doctor told the family if the condition did not improve, a surgery may not be ruled out.

It was learnt that about N60, 000 had already been spent by the family.

The father of the suspects, a pastor, when contacted, declined comment.

He said, “I am sorry; I can’t speak with you on this matter. You know the matter is already with the police and those they accused of committing the offence are in the police cell. So, what do you want me to say? I was told they are taking the matter to court. Let’s leave everything to God.”

Our correspondent learnt that the case was reported at the Ikotun Police Division.

A source told our correspondent that a member of the suspects’ family had on the morning of the incident reported a case of armed attack on them by a tenant.

The wife of the victim, who met the relative at the station, reportedly expressed surprise, telling the officers the reverse was the case.

It was learnt that the relative was put behind the counter after the police saw the victim’s injuries.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident.

She said, “It was around 3am, while the victim was sleeping in his room, that one Solomon Olowogbemi and Damilola Olayeye, the children of his landlady, came in and started fighting with him.

“In the process, they inflicted injury on him with an unknown object. The skin of his scrotum was partly cut off, thereby exposing one of his testicles. The two suspects have been arrested and detained and the victim taken to a hospital.”

Parents Lament About Not Receiving Part Of N100 Million Largesse...Presidency Denies That Money Was Given

The Meeting: Relatives of missing Chibok girls when they met President Jonathan
The N100 million cash gift allegedly given to parents of abducted Chibok girls when they met  President Goodluck Jonathan on July 22 at the Presidential Villa is now causing disquiet among the aggrieved parents.
They  have reportedly cried out that they have been cheated by their community leaders in the sharing formula.
The Presidency allegedly handed over the money to leaders of the Chibok community in Abuja for onward presentation to parents of the abducted schoolgirls.
According to a report monitored on Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, some of the parents are now alleging that the Abuja-based community leaders have shortchanged them.
One parent, who was among those who visited the President, told BBC that he got only N200,000.
He said: “I got only N200,000 out of the said N100million allegedly received by our leaders in Abuja. Some of us got N300,000 and some less than that.
He also said that he was not comfortable with the way the money was shared among parents of the kidnapped girls.
According to him: “Our leaders in Abuja are using the girls to enrich themselves. In fact, some of the parents were screened out of the entourage by the Chibok leaders in Abuja. Many of them are residents of Abuja, not parents of the kidnapped girls”.
Another parent, who was screened out of the delegation that visited the President, said he got only N7,000 out of the money shared.
“I was at the farm when they brought the N7, 000 to my house and I collected it. Some of us got even less, some got N300 and below,” he said.
The parents stressed that they were not selling their daughters and that the money from the President just came to them as they neither asked for, nor expected it.
One of the community leaders, Pobu Bitrus, who is also a member of the House of Representatives and was at the meeting with the President explained to the BBC that after meeting with the President, monies were distributed to the parents in envelopes.
“After we met with the president, the parents were given monies in envelopes and that’s all. All other things they are saying about N100million, I don’t know about that,” Mr. Bitrus said.

No money was given — Presidency
In its reaction, yesterday, the Presidency however said that it never gave  N100 million to parents of the abducted school girls, who were at the Presidential Villa, Abuja last week, saying the story was absolutely false.
Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe,  noted that the government only took care of the parents’ accommodation and feeding, said “the story is absolute falsehood.

“The President did not give any N100m to the visitors from  Chibok.  Government took care of their accommodation, feeding and transportation.

“Government’s plan is robust rehabilitation and resettlement of the girls who have  escaped so they can continue their education.
“The government also plans to rebuild the school and in general terms, repair damaged infrastructure as a result of Boko Haram insurgency in the North East.”
Three months after the Chibok girls were abducted, President Jonathan finally agreed to meet with their parents following an appeal by the Pakistan girl-child education activist Malala Yusoufai. The Presidency had faced intense criticism over its handling of the kidnap of the Chibok girls being held by the extremist Boko Haram sect since April 14.

Police Arrest Boy That Turned To Cat In Rivers State

The residents of Iwofe, Rumuolumeni in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State were on Monday, thrown into confusion following the apprehension of a 10-year-old boy said to have turned into a cat to witch-hunt a family in the community.

A resident of the community who spoke to Vanguard said a cat jumped into a room from nowhere while the occupants were wide awake. The cat was said to have transformed to a boy as they were planning on how to chase out what they thought was a mere cat.

Vanguard gathered that when the cat turned into a young boy, the occupants of the room screamed to attract their neighbours who came to their aid.

The source also said the boy begged his captors that night not to kill him, naming his accomplice as a 48-year-old man said to have sponsored his evil mission to the family.

Meanwhile, the Iwofe Divisional Police Headquarters has arrested the boy and the 48-year-old man. When contacted, a senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Actually, two people have been arrested in connection to witchcraft activity.”

Cameroon Rescues Wife Of Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali Kidnapped By Boko Haram

Security operatives in Cameroon have rescued wife of Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali who was kidnapped by the Boko Haram sect on Sunday along with a traditional ruler of Kolofata town, reports BBC Hausa Service.
The reports say that 16 people lost their lives in the rescue operations, although Cameroon information minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said government was still investigating the matter to ascertain the actual number of people killed.
The Boko Haram members carry out attacks in northern part of Cameroon from Nigeria where they established their base in the Sambisa Forest.

Last week, a Cameroonian court sentenced 14 members of the sect to 20 years imprisonment after they were arrested with weapons in March around Marwa in northern Cameroon, says the BBC Hausa report.

A local religious leader and mayor, Seini Boukar Lamine, was also kidnapped in a separate attack on his home.

Three people were killed during the daring raid.

Boko Haram fighters clashed with the Cameroonian army in cross-border attacks twice since Friday, killing four soldiers.
Cameroon has deployed more than 1,000 soldiers along its border to help combat the Nigerian armed group.

Two Female Suicide Bombers Hit Kano(Graphic Photo Of Mangled Body Of Bomber Inside)

kano blast use
Two female suicide bombers struck in different parts of Kano on Monday, killing  and injuring many on a day Muslim faithful thronged the prayer grounds in the city to observe the Eid-el-Fitri.
The first attack took place at about 10am on a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Mega station   at Hotoro Quarters along Maiduguri Road. The second was at about 1.40pm at the Trade Fair Complex entrance on Zoo Road.
But there were conflicting figures on the numbers of the killed and injured.

Only on Sunday, a bomber hurled explosives at worshippers in a Catholic church in the city, killing five and wounding eight. The same day, a 15-year-old female suicide bomber killed herself while trying to target some police officers.
There have been no claims of responsibility for any of the blasts, but fingers point at the militant   Islamist group, Boko Haram.
A resident, Tijjani Isa, told the Associated Press that the first bomber was standing in line with many women buying kerosene before she set off the bomb.
Another resident was quoted by the Agence France Presse as saying that the “female bomber who was milling in the crowd set off explosives concealed under her dress.”
The resident, Habibu Ali, added that “several people, mostly women, were killed.”
Ali’s account, according to the AFP, was supported by another resident, Shehu Mudi, who said that many were killed.

But the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adelenre Shinaba, told journalists that doctors at the Murtala Muhammad Hospital confirmed the death of three, out of the 10 people evacuated from the scene.
He added that the impact of the blast caused partial damage to the canopy of the kerosene section of the mega station.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, however said   in a statement that four people, including the bomber, died while eight were injured in the mega station attack.
Mba said,
“The suicide bomber and three others have been confirmed dead, eight persons were injured and rushed to the hospital.
“It is instructive to note that the mega station did not go ablaze due to the security barricade put in place by the policemen on duty at the station.
“Security forces have cordoned off the scene and police bomb disposal experts are sweeping the area.”
He added that investigation into the incident had begun, while security operatives had intensified patrol of the city.

The second blast occurred when the female suicide bomber  aged about 19,   blew up herself and injured six others, including two policemen at the entrance gate of the Kano Trade Fair Complex near Shoprite.

The state Police command spokesman, Magaji Majia, told journalists that   security operatives had stopped the suspect for screening when the IEDs hidden under her dress went off.

Majia said the policemen had been treated and discharged, while the remaining four persons are still in hospital.

He said the mangled body of the female suicide bomber was recovered and deposited at an undisclosed government hospital.

A Liberian government official, speaking on condition of anonymity said the news of Sawyer's death was relayed to Liberia by the Nigerian embassy, early Friday morning.
It is reported that Sawyer may have contracted the virus from his sister, who died at the Catholic Hospital some three weeks ago. There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola which can kill up to 90 percent of those infected.

Kaduna Attack: How I Lost My Eye To Bomb Blast – Survivor

From their hospital beds, survivors of Wednesday’s bomb blasts that rocked Kaduna metropolis have been telling their gory tales. The twin bomb blasts left more than 110 people dead.
Ahmadu Bala, who was one of the victims of the first bomb blast at Alkali Road, is presently struggling to stay alive after losing his right eye to the blast.

Narrating his ordeal at the Yusuf Dantsoho Hospital where he is receiving treatment, he said he was caught in the blast after leaving the venue of the closing of Ramadan Tafsir conducted by revered Islamic scholar Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, the presumed target of the bomb blast.
Bala narrated: “I was on my way back from the closing of the Ramadan lecture at Murtala Square when I heard a loud sound and, before I knew what was happening, I found myself on the floor far away from where I remember standing.
“My head felt very heavy before I realized my right eye had been blown off by the bomb and I lost consciousness. I was rushed to Yusuf DanTsoho Hospital by a good Samaritan, I was told after I regained consciousness. I came from a village called Labar, near Jaji in Kaduna State, just to attend the lecture and I became a victim of circumstance.
“I am pleading with the Kaduna State government to look into my plight and take drastic measure to save my life and the life of others affected by the bomb.”
Five victims of the bomb blast at Alkali Road were brought to the hospital, four of them with injuries and the fifth one (Ahmadu Bala) had his right eye blown out by the bomb.
A source at the hospital told LEADERSHIP Friday: “We suggest that the government should, as a matter of urgency, fly the young man abroad for proper treatment because his eye as well as part of his skull was affected by the blast and, if it is not treated promptly, the wound can get infected and it will have a long-time effect on the victim.”
Another survivor revealed how he narrowly escaped death but had his leg cut into two. The survivor, who gave his name as Mallam Ibrahim Isa, told LEADERSHIP Friday that he was returning home with his friends from the last lecture of the Ramadan season, also called the Tafsir, when he heard a loud sound.
Ibrahim said he did not know what happened after he heard the sound until he found himself in the hospital with one of his legs cut into two. “I suddenly heard a sound and, before I knew it, my leg was cut into two. Myself and other friends were on our way home after the Tafsir when the explosion took place. Our car was not very close to the bomber’s car.”
One other survivor, Ahmadu, said his car was just a few metres from the vehicle of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, who was reportedly targeted by the bombers, when the bomb went off. “I cannot recall how it happened. I only saw myself at the hospital. What I can remember is that we were following the Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s car when the explosion occurred. God has saved me from death. I heard that some of my friends died. I went to the closing of the Ramadan Tafsir from a village along Zaria Road but, unknown to me, I was going to be bombed. We pray that God will expose the masterminds of the suicide bomb explosions,” Ahmadu said.
Another survivor, Muhammed Sarki, who managed to speak to LEADERSHIP Friday simply thanked God for saving him.
Sarki, a trader at Kawo roadside market, said: “I saw the Toyota Sienna but before we knew what was happening, I saw myself in the hospital.”
An eyewitness who also spoke with LEADERSHIP Friday said that when the blast exploded, they saw a human head suspected to be the decapitated head of one of the bombers fly to a compound close to the scene of the first explosion.
The eyewitness said the sight of the head and the horror of the attack which killed scores of people on the spot filled everyone with shock as survivors scampered for safety.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the Kaduna twin-bomb explosions has risen with more deaths recorded at the hospitals.
An official of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ali Baba Mohammed, confirmed that three more victims died at the 44 Army Reference Hospital, while the number of victims on admission receiving treatment had gone down to 37.
A source with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) told our correspondent that 13 out of the severely injured victims had died in the hospitals.
The source also added that there are fears that more victims who received life-threatening injuries are currently on danger list at the two hospitals visited yesterday morning.
According to the source, the corpses were deposited in mortuaries at Saint Gerald General Hospital, 44 Military Reference Hospital, Yusuf Danstoho Hospital and Barau Dikko Specialists Hospital.
“Our staff worked throughout the night to ensure that more lives were saved but it is unfortunate that we lost several others,” the source said.
The medical director of the Yusuf Danstoho Hospital in Kaduna, Mohammed Bello, who spoke to our correspondents at the hospitals praised the patriotism of the resident doctors who suspended their strike to provide emergency service to the victims of the explosions.
“Over 20 doctors cut short the strike and reported at the hospital to provide emergency services to the victims of the explosions.
“I must say that the response to the explosions was very encouraging. Most of the senior and junior doctors reported to the hospital to provide service to the affected victims,” he said.

Seperatists In Ukraine Kidnap 9 Nigerian Students

9 Nigerian students in Ukraine were earlier this week, kidnapped in the Ukrainian city of Lugansk.
Ukrainian news agencies say militants abducted the Nigerian students on Monday and have been holding them as prisoners at an occupied government security building. The city is deep inside rebel-
held territory, close to the Russian border.

Colonel Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, on Wednesday told a news conference that negotiations are underway to free the abducted Nigerian students. That people with experience conducting negotiations were now making contact with what
he called "the terrorists."  Adding that Ukrainian officials hoped the talks would end "successfully in the near future."

Separatists seeking greater autonomy have been waging a bloody battle in eastern Ukraine against the government.

LG Rolls Out Premium Smart Aplliances That 'Chat'

LG Electronics (LG) announced the introduction of its premium smart appliances with revolutionary HomeChat messaging service in South Korea. HomeChat employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) and LINE, the popular mobile messenger app with over 300 million users, to let homeowners communicate, control, monitor and share content with LG’s latest smart appliances. Continue...

oducing a whole new level of convenience, the company’s premium smart appliance lineup includes a camera-equipped refrigerator, a washing machine that allows users to start and download washing cycles remotely via HomeChat and a Lightwave oven that supports NFC and WiFi for convenient control from any location.

LG HomeChat incorporates the popular LINE application to allow users to receive recommendations and control settings when away from home. With an intuitive interface, HomeChat makes communicating with LG’s smart refrigerator, washing machine or oven much like chatting with a close friend. For extra convenience, the Quick Button feature enables fast and easy access to each appliance’s most commonly used functions. HomeChat also gives users the choice of three different modes: Vacation, Away and Return-home. LG’s new service even brings an element of fun to appliances, offering a selection of over 40 unique LINE stickers to add an enjoyable, personal component to conversations.

“Today’s intelligent home appliances offer a variety of useful functions but many consumers still find setting them up an extremely complicated process.” said Seong-jin Jo, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “Not only does LG HomeChat help simplify and enhance our products, they also deliver a unique user experience, adding even more value to our customers’ lives.”

It’s most advanced smart refrigerator incorporates several breakthrough innovations, such as the Smart View feature. The wide angle camera can show content not only in the upper shelves, but also food items on the bottom-most shelf. The built-in camera detects the opening and closing of the refrigerator, capturing images of the food items stored inside when last opened. Using HomeChat, users can immediately see exactly what they need to buy when they are at the grocery store or supermarket.

Another notable feature is the Smart Manager feature which transforms the refrigerator into a complete food management system. Using the built-in LCD panel or LG Smart Refrigerator smartphone app, users can check the content of their refrigerator without opening the door. The Smart Manager’s Freshness Tracker makes it possible to input a wide range of foods and beverages to keep track of expiration dates. Smart Manager can also recommend meal options based on the ingredients stored in the refrigerator.

LG’s unique Health Manager can make recipe recommendations as well as daily and weekly meal plans based on the user’s personal profile. Age, sex, weight and height information are used to determine body mass index (BMI), which is then used to create an appropriate, personalized meal plan.

Among the groundbreaking innovations in home appliance is the LG Smart washing machine, which allows consumers to remotely control and monitor their LG smart washing machine from outside the home using HomeChat.  By texting start washing cycle when they head for home, LG’s smart washing machine will ensure that the laundry is completed by the time they get home. And by texting what are you doing? users can receive real time updates on the washer’s progress. LG’s smart washing machine is equipped with an intuitive smart touch display that makes it easy to select or download appropriate wash cycles via a WiFi connection.

The LG Smart Lightwave Oven with HomeChat and Recipe Search assists homeowners to converse with their smart LGoven to recommend recipes for specific dishes. Select Return-home using HomeChat and the smart oven will ask, what dish would you like to make today? and open the Recipe Search window. Users can receive alerts on their smartphoneswhen new recipes are available, encouraging family members to try new and interesting dishes.

LG Electronics has once again surpassed consumer expectations with the introduction of the innovative HomeChat compatible refrigerator, washing machine and oven. This accomplishment only secures their place as a global leader in the home appliance industry. After its successful launch in Korea, LG plans to introduce the HomeChat compatible smart refrigerator, washing machine and oven in other markets including the USA.

Politicians buy human parts from me, says suspect (photo)

The Kwara state Police command yesterday July 23rd paraded two men who they said are involved in trading of human parts.

The men whose names were given as Amos Kareem and Abubakar Ladan were arrested with human head, leg and hand in Tabira village, Okuta in Baruten LGA of the state, according to a report by Vanguard.

When interviewed, one of the suspects, Abubakar Ladan said Amos Kareem promised to give him a motorcycle if he could find him human head, hand and leg. His desire to own a motorcycle made him go to a cemetery where he exhumed bodies and cut off their heads, hands and legs (pictured above).

When asked what he wanted to do with the human parts, Amos Kareem said he sold them to politicians. He however refused to disclose the identities of the politicians.

The police also paraded a man said to be an accomplice, having accommodated the suspects in Tabira village, though the man denied knowledge of the business Kareem and Ladan were involved in.
