A painting called “Truth” – showing the US president with his arms outstretched and a crown of thorns on his head is causing an uproar.
It was originally supposed to debut nearly four years ago at New York City’s Union Square, but that event was cancelled due to public outrage.
In the piece, by Michael D’Antuono, the President is shown wearing a suit and red tie with his arms outstretched.
But instead of actually being nailed to a cross like Jesus, Mr Obama’s arms are extended drawing back a blue curtain. He has a crown of thorns resting on his head.
According to Michael D’Antuono:
‘I always regretted cancelling my exhibit in New York because I feel my First Amendment rights should override someone’s hurt feelings.’
“We should celebrate the fact that we live in a country where we are given the freedom to express ourselves.”
“The crucifixion of the president was meant metaphorically,” he continued. “My intent was not to compare him to Jesus.”
